Our Story

Welcome to TreadlingHome!

I’m Katie, the owner, designer, craftsperson, writer and all around crazy person behind the TreadlingHome blog and product lines.  I have a passion for doing things myself; including everything from gardening (vegetables and flowers) to sewing, crafting and cooking.

I also have a passion for teaching…that’s why I went to school for it!  I have a Social Studies education degree and I love to tie what I’m doing with TreadlingHome projects back to the history lessons I love so much to give.

Each project we have done, whether it be a recipe or DIY project, has ties back to the way things used to be. With each project, Josh and I are working towards living a more sustainable lifestyle, though sometimes we still fall a bit short.

I love sharing my personal history attached to each project we do. I work everyday to ensure you are getting the highest quality content possible, that not only helps you learn a new skill, but also reminds you of what’s really important in life; family, friends and doing your best to leave the world a better place than when you found it.

About the TreadlingHome-Stead

My husband Josh and I bought our home back in 2015; a 2 acre plot of gentle rolling hills with a charming ranch style home located in Southeastern Ohio.

The first thing we wanted to do after purchasing our home was cover the windows to help start the process of making our new house the home we had always dreamt of.  I quickly realized that not a single window in our new home was a “standard size” since most of them are short and wide and seated higher than usual in the walls, about my chest high.

After hours of scouring the internet and local stores looking for the perfect curtains, I finally talking with Josh and decided to make them myself. This would ensure they would fit our style, and the windows, perfectly.

I then unpacked my heirloom treadle sewing machine (circa 1920’s) and got to work making valences for the kitchen and curtains for our bedroom.

As I worked on these first projects for our new home, I began to realize that I was treadling my way to the home that my husband and I had always wanted.  A place that we could express ourselves, do things our way and grow in love together; and so we have done just that.

Our home and the land that surrounds it is still a work in progress, of course, since no home is ever really “finished” when you’re a do it yourselfer.  We are forever improving the landscaping, soil drainage, decor of the house, the chicken coop and so much more on a never ending to-do list here on the homestead.

Over the years I’ve been trying my best to become the housewife and partner my husband deserves, and working hard to put my knowledge and research to work for us.

I hope that you will join and grow with me on my journey, as I figuring out how to apply the knowledge and techniques I learned growing up with do it yourself parents and friends to make this the life and home Josh and I have always dreamt of.

*A Note from the TreadlingHome-Steaders*

My husband Josh and I would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being members of the Treadling Nation, and are looking forward to continuing our journey with you by our side.

Wonderful blog! Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers?

I’m hoping to start my own blog soon but I’m a little
lost on everything. Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m totally confused ..
Any recommendations? Thanks a lot! http://mamiesox0358031.pen.io/

      Hi Ruben,
I would suggest starting with a free platform that has upgrade options, and then upgrading if you feel the need. I picked WordPress because they have the options to upgrade to some pretty awesome paid services if you wish. I have built this site using only the free features on WordPress, if that helps you gage at all. I’ve never had an issue with it and have suggested it to several people. I hope that helps a little.
